Google makes shopping for clothes easy, rolls out AI-powered virtual try-on feature
Online shopping always lacked one thing, the “try-it-on” before purchasing. Google has introduced a virtual try-on feature for shoppers so they can see how well the clothes they want to purchase will fit them. And not only fit, but drape, stretch, cling, fold, and even form wrinkles!
Besides, this virtual try-on feature will assist the buyers in finding the perfect match in clothing items and also in a variety of styles, colors, patterns, and sizes. It is currently available in the US for women’s tops from brands like Anthropologie, Everlane, H&M, and LOFT.
How it will be made possible is even interesting! Google says that the virtual try-on feature is powered by a new generative AI model that can take just one clothing image and accurately reflect how it would look on a diverse set of real models in various poses.

How does Google’s virtual try-on feature work?
Google’s virtual try-on feature works by using a generative AI model called TryOnDiffusion. This model is trained on a massive dataset of images of clothing and people.
When customers search for a product on Google they will have to click on the “Try On” badge. Then the AI model will take an image of the clothing item and will generate a realistic image of the item on a real human model.
The TryOnDiffusion model is trained using a process called diffusion. Diffusion is a type of machine learning that starts with a random image and then gradually refines it until it matches the desired output. In this case, the desired output is a photorealistic image of a clothing item on a real model.
This model is still under development, but it has already achieved impressive results. In tests, the model has been able to generate photorealistic images of clothing items on a diverse range of models, including different body types, skin tones, and hair colors.
This feature is expected to become even more accurate and realistic with developments. This will make it a valuable tool for online shoppers who want to see how clothes will look on them before they buy them.
How to use Google’s virtual try-on feature?
If you want to shop using this feature all you need to do is follow the steps given below:
- Search for a product on Google.
- Click on the “Try On” badge.
- The feature will take an image of the clothing item and show it on a real-looking model.
- The AI model will consider the size, shape, skin tone, and pose of the model, to create a realistic image of how the clothing item would look on you. You can see it on all body types, skin tones, and hairs.
- You can then rotate, zoom, and move the image to see how the clothing item would look from different angles.
- You can also save or share the image.
The feature also allows shoppers to see how the clothing item will drape, stretch, cling, fold, and form wrinkles and shadows on the model. The virtual try-on feature is a major step forward for online shopping. It can help shoppers to avoid the hassle of returning unwanted clothes and make more informed purchase decisions. It is a great way for brands to show their products and increase sales.
