Not often do we see a tech company like Humane come into existence. Its mission is ambitious. The generation of post-smartphones. It is set to deliver the best human computing experience ever.

What is Humane?

Humane is a technology startup company introduced by former Apple employees, Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno. This is a secret company and not much is known about it on the internet or outside. Nobody knows what they’re building or what they’re doing, yet.

According to the information given on their website, Humane is built on a 3-pillar belief system of values, Trust, Truth and +Joy.

On October 8th, 2018, Imrana and Bethany both tweeted about Humane for the first time. Since then, Humane has hired 140 employees, surprisingly 60 of them are ex employees of Apple. For instance, Brian Huppi, who worked at Apple for 12 years and has built the capacitive touch screen technology used in iPhones. 

“Humane” is started with a mission of building technology that is Familiar, Natural and Human. Products that connect us with ourselves, the people and the world we’re in. Technology that aims on improving human experience and is developed with good intentions. And Interaction, that feels natural and magical, and gives Joy.

Humane is a technology company founded by Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno in 2017, after they left their long careers at Apple. The company aims to create products and technologies that are more humane, respectful of people’s time and attention, and designed to enrich their lives. 

As a co-founder, Imran brings his extensive experience in product design and innovation, having worked on some of the most iconic products at Apple, such as the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. He is also credited with inventing the “Slide to Unlock” feature on the iPhone, which revolutionized the way people interact with their phones.

Bethany, on the other hand, brings her expertise in project management and engineering program management, having led the development and launch of several successful products at Apple, including the iPad. 

Together, Imran and Bethany are focused on creating products that are intuitive, empowering, and respectful of people’s privacy and autonomy. Humane’s approach to technology is centered on the idea that products should be designed to serve people, not the other way around.

What are they creating?

They are set upon creating a technology that works on the commands of our voice and is projected on our fingertips.

In the teaser video released by the company, they hinted at a possible laser-projection device that could one day replace the iPhone. While details about the device are still scarce, the video suggests that it would be a more natural and immersive way to interact with technology, rather than staring at a screen all the time. 

Imran Chaudhri demonstrated a demonstration of Humane’s mysterious device at a TED Talk in 2021. The device, which is still in development, is designed to be a more intuitive and natural way to interact with technology, without relying on a screen. Instead, the device uses a projector to display visual information onto surfaces such as the user’s palm or a nearby wall.

In the demo, Imran showed how the device could translate comments into French spoken in his own voice and display visual information about an incoming phone call from his wife and Co-founder of Humane. The device is designed to be worn in the user’s pocket and can be activated by voice or touch commands. 

The device represents Humane’s vision for a more humane and natural way to interact with technology, without the constant distraction of a screen. While the device is still in development and it’s unclear when it will be available to the public, it’s an exciting glimpse into the future of technology and how it could be more in tune with our human needs and desires.

What is the Purpose of such a device?

A simple answer to that would be, to eliminate the dominance of smartphones in our lives. 

Let’s be honest here, we are completely under control of our handset mobile phones. An average person spends 3 hours and 15 minutes on their phone daily. That’s a major chunk of our time if seen on a broader level. We are getting disconnected from the world around us, getting involved way too much in the virtual world inside of our phones.
